Zelda: First Female Director Talks Echoes of Wisdom

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom marks a significant milestone – the first Zelda game helmed by a female director, Tomomi Sano. This article delves into details revealed during Nintendo's "Ask the Developer" interviews, highlighting Sano's journey and the game's unconventional development.

The Legend of Zelda series, renowned for its epic narratives and intricate puzzles, welcomes a new era with Echoes of Wisdom. This installment is doubly groundbreaking: Princess Zelda is the playable protagonist, and it's the first directed by a woman. Sano, previously a support director contributing to Grezzo's remakes (Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Link's Awakening, and Twilight Princess HD), and other Nintendo franchises, now leads this pivotal project. Her role involved production management, suggesting refinements, and ensuring gameplay aligned with Zelda series standards. Series producer Eiji Aonuma highlighted her consistent involvement in Grezzo's Zelda remakes. Sano’s career, spanning over two decades, includes early work on titles like Tekken 3 and later contributions to various Zelda and Mario & Luigi games.

Echoes of Wisdom's Unconventional Genesis

Echoes of Wisdom's origins lie in the aftermath of the Link's Awakening remake. Grezzo, tasked with charting the franchise's future, initially proposed a new remake. However, they presented a more ambitious concept: a Zelda dungeon creator. Aonuma’s challenge to Grezzo ("What kind of game would you create?") yielded diverse proposals. While the final game shares similarities with the winning concept, its initial form differed significantly. Early prototypes explored "copy-and-paste" mechanics and a blend of top-down and side-view perspectives. Grezzo spent over a year developing this dungeon-creation mechanic.

Aonuma's intervention, described as "upending the tea table," dramatically altered the game's direction. He saw greater potential in using copied items as tools within pre-designed dungeons rather than player-created ones. This shift emphasized creative problem-solving, allowing players to use copied elements in unconventional ways (e.g., using a Thwomp enemy from a side-view perspective in a top-down setting). Initial concerns about exploitation were overcome, leading to the removal of restrictions and a focus on "mischievous" gameplay.

The development team formalized this "mischievous" approach with guiding principles: the ability to paste items freely, solving puzzles with unexpected elements, and ingenious echo usage that feels almost like "cheating." This design philosophy aligns with the series' tradition of creative freedom, exemplified by the Myahm Agana Shrine in Breath of the Wild. Aonuma stresses the importance of unconventional solutions, emphasizing that excluding them diminishes the fun.

Echoes of Wisdom launches September 26th on Nintendo Switch, presenting an alternate Zelda timeline where she rescues Hyrule from rifts tearing across the land.
