Summary
Stray Kite Studios, a team of industry veterans with experience on titles like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has announced Wartorn, their first original game. This real-time strategy roguelite boasts destructible environments, impactful moral choices, and a striking painterly art style. Wartorn is slated for early access release on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
Wartorn is the debut original title from Dallas-based Stray Kite Studios, founded in 2018 and currently employing around 30 people. Prior to Wartorn, the studio's credits include the standalone version of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure and numerous creative maps for Fortnite.
This new game casts players into a chaotic fantasy world, following two elven sisters on a perilous journey to reunite with their family. Their quest will be filled with challenging battles and morally complex decisions.
Wartorn Is Chaotic in More Than One Way
Wartorn's world is deeply fractured and chaotic, testing the sisters' resilience in multiple ways. Adding to the chaos is the game's physics-driven environmental destruction system, ensuring no two playthroughs are alike. The game's core theme explores finding purpose amidst this chaos. "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us," shares Stray Kite Studios co-founder and creative director Paul Hellquist.
Wartorn Will Require Players To Make Tough Decisions
Beyond combat, players face difficult choices, such as deciding who to save or feed, shaping the narrative and ensuring replayability. Combat itself offers strategic freedom through a dynamic magic system. Players can creatively combine elemental forces like fire, water, and lightning, exploiting environmental interactions for tactical advantage (e.g., shocking enemies in water or igniting tar-covered foes).

Wartorn's roguelite progression system allows upgrades to carry over between runs, making subsequent attempts easier. The game's painterly aesthetic enhances the dramatic setting, while a slow-motion feature provides precise control amidst the chaos, ensuring accessibility for all players. Launching in early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025, Wartorn promises a unique and challenging experience.
