NetEase's Upcoming Open-World RPG, Ananta (formerly Project Mugen), Unveils New Trailer
Remember Project Mugen, the anticipated urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? The game has undergone a name change, now officially titled Ananta. Initially announced at Gamescom 2023, Ananta's recent trailer offers a glimpse into its world, following a long period of silence. A further reveal is promised on December 5th. Until then, enjoy the official trailer:
The Significance of the Name Change
While developers haven't commented, the Sanskrit word "Ananta" translates to "infinite," mirroring the meaning of the original title, "Mugen." This is further reinforced by the Chinese title. The name change has sparked mixed reactions within the gaming community, although the continued development is a welcome relief.
Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually striking, the lack of gameplay footage currently gives Neverness to Everness an advantage in the eyes of some players. However, many find Ananta's aesthetic more captivating.
A Curious Development
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all previous social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with a substantial following, opting for a fresh start across most platforms. Only their Discord server remains, albeit renamed. This unexpected move has left many gamers puzzled.
In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator battling paranormal threats. The cast includes characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For more details on gameplay, visit the official website.
