Ōkami 2 — Capcom, Hideki Kamiya, and Machine Head Discuss Hotly Anticipated Sequel in Exclusive Interview

Author : Allison Feb 19,2025

Twenty years after the original Ōkami's release, Amaterasu, the sun goddess and source of all goodness, makes a surprising comeback. Announced at last year's Game Awards, a sequel is underway, helmed by Hideki Kamiya (formerly of PlatinumGames) at his new studio, Clovers, with Capcom publishing and Machine Head Works (a Capcom veteran-staffed studio) providing support. The team boasts a blend of fresh talent and original Ōkami veterans, promising a high-caliber continuation.

Details on the sequel remain scarce. Is it a direct continuation, or something different? How did this project materialize after so many years? Was that truly Amaterasu in the trailer?

IGN recently interviewed Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata in Osaka, Japan. Their two-hour discussion covered the sequel's origins, their collaboration, and their studios.

Here are key excerpts from the interview:

IGN: Kamiya-san, you've discussed leaving PlatinumGames, citing a differing development philosophy. What are your core game development beliefs, and how will they shape Clovers?

Kamiya: The creator's personality significantly impacts the player experience. My vision for development at Platinum diverged from the company's direction. Clovers emerged from a desire to create an environment where I could realize my creative goals.

IGN: What defines a "Hideki Kamiya game"?

Kamiya: I don't strive for a recognizable "Kamiya style." My focus is on crafting unique, unprecedented gameplay experiences.

IGN: The connection between Clovers and Clover Studio?

Kamiya: The name "Clovers" is a tribute to my time at Clover Studio (Capcom's fourth development division), symbolized by the four-leaf clover. The "C" in our logo represents "creativity."

IGN: Capcom's involvement?

Hirabayashi: Capcom has long desired an Ōkami sequel. Kamiya's departure from Platinum presented the opportunity to initiate discussions.

IGN: The sequel's genesis?

Hirabayashi: Capcom sought the right moment and personnel. The opportunity arose with Kamiya's departure.

Kamiya: I've always wanted an Ōkami sequel. The original story felt incomplete. Casual discussions with Takeuchi (Capcom producer) over the years culminated in this project.

Sakata: As a Clover Studio alum, the timing felt right given the circumstances.

IGN: Machine Head Works' role?

Sakata: Machine Head Works acts as a bridge between Clovers and Capcom, leveraging experience with both and the RE Engine. We also have Ōkami veterans on our team.

Hirabayashi: Their experience with the RE Engine and previous Ōkami ports is invaluable.

IGN: Why the RE Engine?

Hirabayashi: It's crucial for realizing Kamiya's artistic vision.

Kamiya: The RE Engine's expressive capabilities meet expectations for this title.

IGN: Why the Ōkami sequel now, given the original's perceived commercial performance?

Hirabayashi: Capcom recognizes a large, dedicated Ōkami fanbase. Consistent sales demonstrate enduring appeal.

Kamiya: Initial development challenges were overcome. Later releases and fan feedback showed significant Ōkami appreciation. The Game Awards announcement's positive reception solidified our decision.

IGN: Plans to involve other former Clover Studio members?

Kamiya: Several original Ōkami team members are involved through Machine Head Works. The current team is stronger and more experienced than the original.

IGN: Reflecting on the original Ōkami, what are you most proud of?

Kamiya: My love for my hometown (Nagano Prefecture) influenced the game's creation. The sequel will retain the balance of nature's beauty and the story's darker elements, aiming for broad appeal across age groups.

IGN: How has game development evolved since the original Ōkami?

Sakata: Modern technology allows us to achieve visual goals that were impossible with the PS2. The RE Engine is instrumental.
