Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment's highly anticipated fantasy RPG, is slated for release in 2025, promising a richly detailed experience shaped by player choices. Game director Carrie Patel recently offered insights into the game's complex gameplay and multiple endings.
Avowed's Intricate Gameplay and Branching Narrative
A Political Power Struggle in the Living Lands
In an interview with Game Developer, Patel highlighted Avowed's focus on player agency. Every decision, no matter how seemingly insignificant, contributes to a cohesive and personalized journey. The game encourages players to reflect on their experience, asking themselves: "When am I engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest flag? What keeps me invested?"The choices players make directly impact their ability to navigate the political landscape of Eora's Living Lands. Patel emphasizes the importance of exploration, stating that outcomes "depend on what you're able to find." She further adds that she enjoyed weaving together the storylines that connect different facets of the game world.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. Patel defines meaningful roleplaying as "giving players things to dig into," allowing them to define their character and express themselves through their actions and interactions.
Beyond its deep RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, melee weaponry, and firearms. Patel explains that the diverse abilities and weapon combinations offer significantly different playthrough experiences.
Confirming multiple endings with IGN, Patel revealed a substantial number of potential outcomes. She stated, "Our ending slides number in the double digits, with many different combinations possible." True to Obsidian's style, the final outcome is a direct reflection of the player's cumulative choices throughout the game.
