Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants
Prepare for a volcanic adventure! In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka unveiled the Oilwell Basin, a unique, vertically structured locale, and its fearsome inhabitants.
Delve into the Oilwell Basin
Unlike the series' typically expansive horizontal maps, the Oilwell Basin offers a layered challenge. Fujioka explains, "The deeper you venture, the hotter and more magma-filled it becomes." The upper levels are swampy oilfields, transitioning to a volcanic, almost underwater ecosystem at the lower depths, particularly during the "Plenty" event. This design draws inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. Tokuda notes the striking change in atmosphere during the Plenty event, transforming the area into a vibrant marine environment, teeming with unique creatures.
Meet the Nu Udra: The Black Flame
Reigning over this fiery landscape is the Nu Udra, a colossal octopus-like monster with a flammable, slimy body. Its powerful tentacles ensnare prey before unleashing devastating flames. Fujioka reveals the design inspiration: "I always wanted to include a tentacled creature," he says, explaining the decision to adapt an aquatic creature for a more striking, demonic appearance. The Nu Udra's unique battle music further enhances its menacing presence, incorporating elements reminiscent of black magic. Flash Bombs are ineffective against this sensory predator.
More Than Just the Nu Udra
The Oilwell Basin isn't a one-monster show. Also inhabiting this harsh environment are:
- Ajarakan: A massive, fiery monkey-like creature employing martial arts-inspired attacks.
- Rompopolo: A bizarre, globular monster wielding toxic gases, inspired by the stereotypical mad scientist. Its drops yield surprisingly cute equipment.
- Gravios: A returning favorite from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, perfectly suited to the Oilwell Basin's volcanic setting. Tokuda explains its inclusion: "We wanted a monster fitting the environment, making sense in the game's progression, and not too similar to existing monsters."
Get ready for an unforgettable hunting experience! Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28th.
