Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

Author : Christian Feb 26,2025

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads sheds some light on the highly anticipated project.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed that this is indeed a direct sequel to the original Ōkami, a "continuation of the story" from the first game. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully responded with "I wonder..." when asked if the trailer's protagonist was Amaterasu, but Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed it was, indeed, the sun goddess.

PlayWhile not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the previous entry, Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews, partly due to its platform and the absence of key original team members like Kamiya. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and its varied reception, stating that the new sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's story, thus side-stepping any potential conflicts with Ōkamiden's narrative.

The original Ōkami's ending provides fertile ground for a sequel. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, promising fresh challenges and adventures for both protagonists.

However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the early announcement as a product of their excitement. According to Hirabayashi, further updates are some time away.
