Free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, and weeks after its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch didn't achieve the necessary success to sustain the game and the studio. While initially optimistic, with around 400,000 players and a peak concurrent count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms in the first week, the game ultimately lacked the sustained player base and revenue to cover operating costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding. Mitchell acknowledged the challenging current state of the gaming industry.

Spectre Divide will be taken offline within 30 days. Players will receive refunds for any money spent since the Season 1 launch.
This news contradicts October 2024 reports stating Spectre Divide was secure. At that time, Mitchell stated Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support the game long-term.
IGN's August 2024 preview praised the game's tactical 3v3 gameplay and innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, the swift shutdown follows the recent failures of other live-service games, including Rocksteady's *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony's *Concord*.
