Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races past another box office milestone, securing the second highest-grossing spot among video game movie adaptations in North America.

With Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, the film has raked in over $204 million domestically after its fourth weekend, adding $11 million from 3,582 theaters. Globally, the film boasts an impressive $384.8 million.

While surpassing its predecessor, Sonic 2, in North American earnings, Sonic 3 still trails significantly behind the reigning champion: The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Mario film's domestic gross of $574,934,330 and global total of $1,359,146,628 represent a potentially insurmountable record for video game adaptations, though upcoming films like the Minecraft movie and the Super Mario Bros. sequel might challenge it.

Despite this, the Sonic 3 team has reason to celebrate. The film is a resounding success for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4.

Other notable video game movie adaptations include 2022's Uncharted, fourth on the domestic list with $148,648,820, and the original Sonic movie, in fifth place at $146,066,470.
