Simu Liu Pitches 'Sleeping Dogs' Film to Studios

Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is aiming to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan's plea on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the project to the big screen.

The film adaptation, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of work and investment, ultimately frustrated by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.

Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, whether he secures the rights or finds another path to production remains uncertain.

The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he goes undercover within a Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed (earning an 8/10 from IGN), the game surprisingly lacked sequels. Liu's involvement could finally bring this popular game to the silver screen.
