Respawn Has Quietly Canceled a Multiplayer FPS Incubation Project

Author : Mia Mar 14,2025

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in layoffs. This news, initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator, has been independently confirmed by IGN.

The canceled project was a multiplayer FPS, evidenced by a job posting from last year. It stemmed from a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS project at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains unconfirmed, sources describe it as a “small” number of individuals. At least one individual connected to the project has clarified on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This cancellation follows a pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within EA. This began in 2023 with job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters, and continued a year ago with company-wide layoffs affecting 670 employees and the closure of several projects, including the aforementioned Star Wars FPS. Respawn itself experienced layoffs at that time. Further restructuring at BioWare has since led to additional, unspecified job losses.

Electronic Arts has been contacted for comment.
