Nintendo's Surprise: An Interactive Alarm Clock and a Mysterious Switch Online Playtest
Who saw this coming? Nintendo has launched a surprising new product: the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo, an interactive alarm clock. And that's not all – they've also announced a secretive Switch Online playtest.
The Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo – Wake Up in a Game World!
The Alarmo, priced at $99, uses game sounds to coax you out of bed. Imagine waking to the sounds of Mario, Zelda, or Splatoon! More game soundtracks are promised as free updates.

This isn't your average alarm clock. It uses a radio wave sensor to detect your movement. The alarm intensifies if you stay in bed too long, only ceasing when you fully get up – a "brief victory fanfare," as Nintendo puts it. A wave of your hand will quieten it temporarily, but only getting out of bed will silence the alarm completely.
According to developer Tetsuya Akama, the radio wave sensor is key. It detects subtle movements without the need for video recording, ensuring better privacy than camera-based solutions. Its radio wave technology allows it to function in dark rooms and even through obstacles.
Early Access for Switch Online Members
For a limited time, US and Canadian Nintendo Switch Online members can purchase the Alarmo through the My Nintendo Store before its general release. The Nintendo New York store also offers in-person purchases while supplies last.
A Mysterious Switch Online Playtest
Nintendo has also revealed a Switch Online playtest, running from October 23rd to November 5th, 2024. Applications open October 10th and close October 15th (or earlier if participant limits are reached). Up to 10,000 participants will be selected globally, with those outside Japan chosen on a first-come, first-served basis.
To apply, you must:
- Have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership by October 9th, 2024, 3:00 PM PDT.
- Be at least 18 years old by October 9th, 2024, 3:00 PM PDT.
- Have a Nintendo Account registered in Japan, the USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain.
This playtest focuses on a new Nintendo Switch Online service feature, adding another layer of intrigue to Nintendo’s recent announcements.
