MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth season. The game's final season will launch on February 4, 2025, and conclude on May 30, 2025.

Season 5: A Final Farewell

The official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account confirmed the shutdown on January 31, 2025. A blog post on the game's website elaborated, stating that Season 5 will be the final content update. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman from DC Comics and Lola Bunny from Looney Tunes. Both characters will be unlockable through gameplay. After May 30th, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store).

No official reason for the game's closure has been provided.

Offline Play Option Remains

A silver lining for fans: MultiVersus will retain an offline mode. Players can download the latest version of the game between February 4th and May 30th to access this feature, enabling solo play against AI or local multiplayer with up to three friends. The game will automatically generate a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions for Gleamium, the in-game premium currency, ceased on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium can be used until the end of Season 5.

A Brief History and Community Thanks

Initially launched in July 2022 as a public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained traction as a free-to-play platform fighter, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, including characters, rollback netcode, and a PvE mode. Despite these improvements, the game faced ongoing challenges, including technical issues and player dissatisfaction with microtransactions. Reportedly, player counts dropped significantly in July 2024.

At the time of its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support throughout the game's lifecycle.

MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT.
