Last year marked the 15th anniversary of Minecraft, yet despite entering its teenage phase, developer Mojang has no intention of replacing it with a sequel. During a visit to their Stockholm studio, IGN inquired about the potential for a follow-up to the best-selling game. Ingela Garneij, the executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, responded with a witty yet definitive statement: “Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2.”
Although a Minecraft 2.0 isn't on the cards, the survival-crafting phenomenon is set to keep evolving. Mojang's vision extends far into the future, with the goal of at least doubling its current lifespan. “We've existed for 15 years,” Garneij noted. “We want to exist at least 15 years more so we actually, Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I, we work as a team. We set the vision and strategy for our game for what can we do beyond that.”
This ambition is driven by Mojang’s commitment to innovation, building new ideas on their robust foundations. However, Garneij acknowledged that these foundations are showing signs of age. While there are no plans for a complete engine overhaul, integrating new content, like the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update, does require time and effort.
“I think the age of the game is a challenge," Garneij explained. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges].”
Nevertheless, Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games, showing no signs of decline. Mojang has no plans to make Minecraft free-to-play or to incorporate generative AI technology. So, while Minecraft 2 isn't coming soon, the game's future looks bright and expansive.
