What Should James Gunn's Second DCU Movie Be? We Have Ideas

Author : Audrey Mar 16,2025

James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among other announcements, Gunn revealed he's already writing the script for his next DCU film after Superman. He's certainly busy!

While Gunn remained tight-lipped about his next project—likely until after Superman's July release—we've got some ideas for his next DCU endeavor. Which franchises and characters best suit his unique style? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Here are our top picks:

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Despite Batman's frequent big-screen appearances, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates significant buzz. This film reboots Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike previous iterations, it focuses on the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.

While Batman is a Hollywood staple, The Brave and the Bold faces uncertainty. Progress seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's involvement remains questionable post-presentation. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a challenge.

The DCU needs a Batman. His importance necessitates getting this right. If Muschietti departs, Gunn stepping in ensures a successful project (a possibility already being discussed). Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy showcases his skill in emotional father-son stories; imagine his take on Bruce and Damian.

The Flash

The Flash is crucial to any DC Universe, a Justice League cornerstone and a multiverse linchpin. However, his live-action history is rocky. The CW series offers a strong ensemble example (despite its later decline), while Ezra Miller's DCEU Flash and its box office failure left the character tarnished.

The Flash needs a fresh approach, avoiding overused narratives like Flashpoint. The film should spotlight Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), not Batman.

Gunn's dynamic action and ability to connect audiences with heroes make him ideal. He could easily help audiences connect with the man under the mask.

The Authority

Gunn frankly discussed The Authority's challenges, noting difficulty finding a unique angle that avoids overlap with The Boys and similar projects.

"Honestly, Authority's been the hardest, due to the shifting story and needing to stand out in a world with The Boys and its influences," Gunn stated. "We also have beloved characters already filmed whose stories we want to continue. So, it's on the back burner."

The Authority is vital to the expanding DCU, being among the initially announced projects, with María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appearing in Superman. The clash between optimistic heroes (like Superman) and the cynicism of The Authority is key.

Gunn's expertise with misfit heroes and team dynamics makes him a perfect fit. The Authority is challenging, but Gunn could succeed.

Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie

Gunn admitted setbacks for the planned Waller series, citing scheduling conflicts with Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As these commitments ease, prioritizing Waller—potentially as a film—makes sense.

Waller and ARGUS are the DCU's connective tissue. Creature Commandos features Waller, ARGUS appears in Superman, and Rick Flag, Sr. (Frank Grillo) is in both Superman and Peacemaker: Season 2. Focusing on this element and its puppet master is logical. If the series falters, a film might be a better approach.

Batman & Superman: World's Finest

Batman v Superman (2016), despite a respectable box office run, fell short of expectations. Its dark tone proved unpopular.

The film lacked the desired team-up dynamic. Batman and Superman deserve a collaborative film, showcasing their friendship and combating threats beyond individual capabilities. Gunn excels at this type of crossover.

Instead of solely focusing on The Brave and the Bold, Gunn could unite his Superman with The Brave and the Bold's Batman. The DCU needs reliable hits, and a Gunn-directed Batman/Superman film is a strong contender.

Titans

The Teen Titans boast a massive fanbase, stemming from the comics, animated series, and Teen Titans Go!. The Max series, despite flaws, proved their live-action viability.

A live-action Titans movie is arguably more appealing than a Justice League film. Their dysfunctional family dynamic contrasts with the League's. Gunn's success with the Guardians makes him ideal for this team.

Justice League Dark

The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, indicates a supernatural focus. Establishing a supernatural Justice League counterpart makes sense.

Justice League Dark allows magical heroes (Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, Constantine) to unite against threats beyond the traditional League's capabilities. Their dysfunction aligns with Gunn's storytelling. Adding Batman or Wonder Woman broadens appeal.
