HBO is reportedly in final negotiations with John Lithgow, the acclaimed actor known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, in their upcoming Harry Potter series. Variety reports that a deal is imminent, although HBO has declined to officially confirm the casting. This news follows November reports that Mark Rylance was a frontrunner for the role.
"We appreciate that such a high-profile series will generate much speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "During pre-production, we will only confirm details upon finalizing agreements."
Lithgow's extensive acting credits include memorable performances in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.
The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This approach is perhaps unsurprising given J.K. Rowling's reported involvement in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series promises a faithful adaptation of the novels, aiming for a richer, more detailed narrative than the film adaptations allowed. Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, known for their work on Succession and Game of Thrones respectively, will serve as directors and writers.
