Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with information to be revealed gradually, according to series creator Yuji Horii. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed the Square Enix team is diligently working on the project.
This update follows a May 2024 announcement regarding the passing of key figures in the Dragon Quest franchise: character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. The series' lead producer, Yu Miyake, had also previously transitioned to lead Square Enix's mobile game division.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates had sparked fan concerns about the game's status. However, Horii's comments effectively confirm Dragon Quest XII's ongoing development.
Initially announced as part of the franchise's 35th-anniversary celebration, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has since reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake surpassed sales projections, achieving 2 million units sold.
