Civilization 7 Dev Firaxis Says 'There's Hope for Gandhi, Yet'

Author : Jacob Mar 19,2025

Civilization VII has arrived, and a familiar face is missing: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple of the series since 1991, his absence has sparked considerable discussion among veteran players. His legendary (and ultimately mythical) "Nuclear Gandhi" bug cemented his place in Civilization lore.

So, where is he? Civilization VII lead designer Ed Beach offers reassurance: Gandhi's return is planned as DLC.

Beach explains that some civilizations, like Great Britain, are also missing from the initial launch. (Note: Carthage and Great Britain will arrive in The Crossroads of the World DLC collection in March 2025, followed by Bulgaria and Nepal.) He highlights Firaxis's strategic approach to civilization selection, noting that even iconic civilizations like Mongolia and Persia were absent from previous base games. The team aims for a balance between familiar favorites and exciting new additions. While some beloved leaders must be omitted initially, Beach confirms that Gandhi's inclusion is part of Firaxis's long-term vision. Hope remains!

Currently, Civilization VII's Steam reviews are mixed. Criticisms include the user interface, limited map variety, and a perceived lack of key features. However, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, expressed confidence that the core Civilization fanbase will embrace the game with continued play, describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
