TouchArcade Rating:
Capcom's recent update to its iOS and iPadOS ports of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village has introduced an unwelcome change: mandatory online DRM. While updates often improve optimization or compatibility, this update requires an internet connection to verify game ownership upon launch. This means offline play is no longer possible. Before the update, these games functioned perfectly offline. The new DRM checks purchase history, displaying an alert requiring confirmation; declining closes the game.
This forced online check, even for already-purchased games, is a significant drawback. While some players may not be affected, the inability to play offline significantly diminishes the user experience and makes these premium-priced ports less appealing. Hopefully, Capcom will reconsider this implementation and find a less intrusive method of verifying purchases, perhaps by performing the check less frequently.
The games remain free to try before purchasing. You can find Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here, Resident Evil 4 Remake here, and Resident Evil Village here. My previous reviews can be found here, here, and here.
