The Quematrice, a colossal chicken-like beast reminiscent of a Cockatrice, prefers fiery breath to petrification. While most weapons are effective against this mid-sized monster, its area-of-effect attacks might favor ranged weapons for less experienced hunters.
While its tail swipes and strikes can inflict damage, the most potent attack is its tail slam. This involves a dramatic upward swing followed by a powerful downward crash. Sidestepping or blocking effectively negates this attack. However, the real threat lies in its fire attacks. These not only cause immediate damage but also inflict burning, steadily draining your health, and can even ignite the ground.
These fire attacks are less telegraphed. One involves a slight head rear, a roar, and a fiery blast from its tail. Another is a sweeping fire attack following a head and tail raise. This can also be part of a charging attack, where it runs towards you before turning and unleashing a fiery blast. For ranged hunters, retreating as it charges is the safest strategy.
How to Capture Quematrice in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capturing the Quematrice requires preparation. Bring Shock Traps, Pitfall Traps, and at least two Tranq Bombs. While one trap suffices, a backup is crucial, especially considering the possibility of escape or interference from other monsters.
Once the Quematrice is significantly weakened (limping, or its skull icon frequently disappears from the minimap), it’s time to set a trap. Ideally, wait until it moves to a new area after limping away for a cleaner capture. Place your trap, lure the Quematrice into it, and then deploy two Tranq Bombs to secure the capture.
