Bayonetta Celebrates 15 Years with PlatinumGames

PlatinumGames is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta with a year-long celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring support. The initial release, lauded for its innovative design and exhilarating gameplay, spurred a series of sequels primarily on Nintendo consoles.

The iconic Bayonetta, directed by Hideki Kamiya (renowned for Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe), introduced a powerful Umbra Witch who combats supernatural foes using firearms, impressive martial arts, and magically-enhanced hair. Its creative premise and fast-paced action garnered significant acclaim, establishing Bayonetta as a prominent female video game anti-hero. While Sega published the first game across various platforms, subsequent sequels became Nintendo exclusives on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. A prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, showcasing a younger Bayonetta, launched on the Switch in 2023. The adult Bayonetta also features as a playable character in recent Super Smash Bros. installments.

PlatinumGames recently announced a "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year" for 2025, promising special announcements and events. Details remain scarce, but fans are encouraged to follow PlatinumGames' social media for updates.

Among the anniversary initiatives, Wayo Records released a limited-edition Bayonetta music box, showcasing the original Super Mirror design and playing "Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny" by Masami Ueda. PlatinumGames is also providing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone wallpapers, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos under a full moon.

Even after 15 years, the original Bayonetta remains celebrated for enhancing the stylish action genre pioneered by Devil May Cry, introducing innovative mechanics such as Witch Time, and influencing subsequent PlatinumGames titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly anticipate further announcements throughout the anniversary year.
