Preparing Children for Hospital Visits: The "HC And" App
Developed in partnership with the Oncology Department at R. H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, hospitalized children and their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication, "HC And - When mother or father has cancer" offers patient information designed for children aged 4-7. Its goal is to ease anxiety and demystify hospital procedures for young patients unfamiliar with medical terminology.
This app serves as an introductory course for the youngest children, their families, and friends facing a parent's cancer diagnosis. Presented through a child's narration and engaging animations, it utilizes a "learn-through-play" approach accessible via tablets, mobile phones, or touchscreens.
Recognizing that children in this age group learn best through play and concrete examples, and that they can easily become overwhelmed by information, "HC And" is structured into short, easily digestible segments. This makes it ideal for children new to the hospital environment.
The app features seven short, sequential stories addressing common questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Hospital staff can use it as an educational tool to foster a shared understanding with young patients.
