Application Description

Investigating vehicle collisions requires thorough data analysis. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows investigators to access and interpret data from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "black box," where supported. This crucial data helps validate insurance claims and provides valuable insights into liability.

Vehicle Support (EDR & Full System Diagnostics):

CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations internationally. Check compatibility here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/

Contextual Accident Reports:

Successful CrashScan reports detail impact severity, orientation (front, rear, side), and provide crucial context, including:

  • Accident severity (minor, moderate, severe)
  • EDR trigger thresholds
  • 5 seconds of pre-crash data (speed, brake/accelerator pedal use, steering)
  • Occupant count and seatbelt status
  • Estimated repair cost
  • Likelihood of structural crush damage
  • Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
  • Contextual comparison of g-forces to daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Status (EDR Data):

Canada: No specific legislation; data is considered diagnostic and non-private. However, insurer consent is a best practice.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, and statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) regulate EDR data access, typically requiring owner/policyholder consent with exceptions.

End-User Consent: By downloading the CrashScan app, you consent to its installation, updates, and data collection as outlined in our privacy statement. You can withdraw consent by uninstalling the app. For more information, visit CollisionSciences.ca.
