Khmer Traditional Board Game: Ouk Chaktrang

In Cambodia, the traditional chess game known as Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ) is a beloved pastime. The name "Ouk" is thought to mimic the sound produced when a chess piece is moved on the board during a check. In the context of the game, "Ouk" specifically means "check," and it's a rule that the player must declare it aloud when checking the opponent's King.

The term "Chaktrang" is formal and originates from the Sanskrit word "Chaturanga" (चतुरङ्ग), which reflects its Indian roots. Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is a two-player game, but uniquely in Cambodia, it often involves two teams of players, adding an extra layer of excitement and entertainment. Cambodian men frequently gather to enjoy this game at local barbershops or men's cafes in their towns or villages.

The primary objective of Chaktrang, like chess, is to checkmate the opponent's King. At the start of the game, the decision on who moves first is based on mutual agreement among the players. In subsequent games, the player who lost the previous game typically gets the privilege to move first. If the initial game ends in a draw, the decision on who moves first in the next game is once again determined by mutual agreement.

Another Khmer Traditional Board Game: Rek

In addition to Ouk Chaktrang, another traditional Cambodian chess game is known as Rek. For more detailed information, please see the Rek game also.
