"Street Fighter Film Secures New Director"

Author : Peyton Apr 04,2025

A new Street Fighter movie has announced its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, renowned for his work on the surreal comedy series, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this upcoming film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with Capcom being "deeply involved" in the project. The film is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This marks another attempt to bring the iconic Street Fighter franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Despite mixed reviews from critics at the time, the movie has since achieved cult status among fans.

While casting details remain under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life. Initially, the project had Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou attached, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement hints at a potential shift towards a more absurdist tone, which could align well with the franchise's more whimsical elements. As a fan, I'm thrilled at the prospect of this new direction.

In the meantime, Street Fighter enthusiasts can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For a detailed look at the game, check out our full Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
