The Last of Us Season 2 Will Feature 'Pretty Brutal' Content Cut From the Game

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will feature previously cut content from the video game The Last of Us Part II, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will revive "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the game's "Lost Levels," partially restored in the PS5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer a range of tones, from the relatively calm party scene and boar hunt to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monsters in the Seattle sewers.

This restored content promises intense viewing. Druckmann described it as "pretty brutal" but expressed excitement for audiences to see it. He also hinted at the appearance of a previously game-only "pretty prominent" character, echoing the Season 1 inclusion of Frank.

Season 2 introduces a substantial cast of new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel. Catherine O'Hara's role, however, remains a mystery.

With the Season 2 premiere slated for April, answers to these mysteries are imminent. However, some questions might linger longer. Unlike Season 1, which adapted the first game completely, HBO plans to extend the adaptation of Part II beyond a single season. Showrunner Craig Mazin stated that Part II's story necessitates a longer adaptation. While Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2 is structured with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.
