Project Zomboid: Mastering Car Hotwiring

Author : Simon Mar 25,2025

In *Project Zomboid*, navigating the vast playable map on foot can be a daunting task, typically reserved for the most dedicated challenge runs. Fortunately, the game offers a more convenient option: driving. Most cars in *Project Zomboid* are functional, and if you can't find the keys, hotwiring provides a quick and effective alternative to get you moving.

Hotwiring a car in *Project Zomboid* is surprisingly straightforward, often requiring just a few button presses. However, there are specific requirements you must meet before you can start collecting cars. While you don't need the best build to achieve this, it's crucial to be aware of these prerequisites if you're planning to start jacking vehicles.

How Does Hotwiring Work in Project Zomboid?

Hotwiring a Car in Project Zomboid

Successfully hotwiring a car allows you to drive it as long as it has fuel and remains in good condition, even without the keys. To hotwire a vehicle, you need to reach at least **Level 1 in Electrical and Level 2 in Mechanics skills**. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements, enabling you to hotwire vehicles from the start.

How to Hotwire a Car in Project Zomboid

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Open the vehicle radial menu (default key is V).
  3. Select the Hotwire option and wait for a few seconds.

Once your character meets the necessary skill requirements or has the Burglar occupation, follow these steps on any working vehicle you can access. The hotwiring process is automatic; once completed, press W to start the engine. Remember, not all vehicles will have fuel, so it's wise to have some gas on hand.

How to Level Electrical and Mechanical Skills

If you prefer not to start as a Burglar, you can manually increase your Electrical and Mechanical skill levels through specific in-game activities. To gain XP in these skills, follow these methods:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics such as digital watches, radios, and televisions.
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.

Additionally, reading books and magazines can boost your skill levels. These can be found while exploring homes and commercial establishments. Check mailboxes, storage sheds, and bookshelves for readable items during your looting sessions. If you're an admin hosting a *Project Zomboid* server, you can directly add skill XP to players using the "/addxp" command, following the syntax provided in the chat box.

For dismantling or installing parts, you'll need tools like a screwdriver. To remove parts from a vehicle, right-click on the part and select the Vehicle Mechanics option.
