Path of Exile 2's Atlas map features four main endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. The Expedition system, a returning favorite from previous leagues, offers a unique and rewarding endgame experience. This guide details how to initiate Expeditions, master the detonation mechanic, navigate the passive skill tree, and maximize your rewards.
PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic, Explained
On the Atlas screen, endgame events are indicated by specific icons. Expeditions are marked by a light blue spiral icon. Use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot to guarantee an Expedition encounter on a chosen map node.
Once in a map containing an Expedition, locate the marked area and tent housing one of four NPCs. While they offer a basic introduction, mastering the mechanics requires further exploration.
Central to the Expedition is the Detonator and a new Explosives UI (bottom-right). Your objective is to strategically place Explosives to spawn Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.
- Runic Monsters: Spawn near Red Markers. Larger markers yield larger monster packs. These packs are further empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: Relics with floating tooltips. They provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage from monsters but higher item rarity from chests).
- Excavated Chests: Spawn near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. They contain event-specific rewards: Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.
Use the Explosives button, then hover to visualize the area of effect (AoE). Explosives only activate Markers within the green circle. For optimal farming, avoid overlapping AoE circles.
After placing Explosives, interact with the Detonator. This activates Markers, spawns empowered Runic Monsters, and begins the event. Death resets the map, but you can strategically retreat and return later. The event persists even if you leave the area.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Take these to Dannig in your Hideout to access the Expedition Map. Slot the Logbook and click "Open Portals."
Logbook Portals function similarly to Waystones, transporting you to a large-scale Expedition with significantly more Explosives. This map features Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss, whose spawn chance increases with map level (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth is crucial for earning Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (2x points per victory).
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Located in the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu (top-left of the Atlas Map), the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances the event. It's found in the top-right of the Atlas Skill Tree screen, distinguished by its glowing blue spiral.
The tree features eight Notable nodes and eight nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and Olroth's challenge). Defeating Olroth rewards 2x skill points, necessitating increased difficulty for each new Notable node.

Each Expedition features one vendor. Artifacts are retained after map completion.
Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock the Expedition Pinnacle system. These maps offer a higher chance of encountering Olroth, who drops high-tier currency and exclusive Uniques. Increasing map difficulty increases Olroth's spawn rate and reward quality.
