Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

Author : Emma Mar 26,2025

The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal a significant size increase over its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con detach from the original Switch, the tablet section dramatically expands and transforms into its upgraded form. This growth indicates that Nintendo is shifting further from the compact handhelds of its past, aligning more closely with larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.

While Nintendo has not yet released the exact dimensions of the Switch 2, we can estimate its size based on the trailer and insights from a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to interact with a Switch 2 mock-up crafted by peripheral designer Genki. Initially, we couldn't verify the accuracy of this design, but Nintendo's new trailer closely matches the Genki model, suggesting our measurements are likely quite close to the final product.

So, how big is the Switch 2? Let us provide you with a rough, estimated guide.

The Genki mock-up vs Nintendo's official Switch 2 design.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

By our estimations, the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement reflects the diagonal size of the display (excluding the bezels), a standard metric for screen dimensions. This matches a rumor from early 2024. Based on this, **we expect the display to be around 177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If our estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original Switch's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in total area**. This represents a significant upgrade. While a larger screen isn't always better, the Switch 2 could offer a stunning visual experience, assuming the display technology meets high standards.

Compared to other handhelds, the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD screen is dwarfed by the Switch 2's display, which is 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. The Switch OLED's 7-inch screen is also outdone, with the Switch 2 being 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

In the realm of portable PCs, the Switch 2 will compete with the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck's 7-inch screen and the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch screen are both larger than any previous Switch model. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch display will still be 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED's screen.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen naturally means a bigger console. The original Switch might fit snugly in your jeans' pocket, but the Switch 2 will likely require a roomier cargo pocket or a bag.

Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES suggest the Switch 2 is just over 10.5 inches long from edge to edge, including the Joy-Cons, and 4.5 inches tall. Through meticulous analysis involving scaling images from the trailer and comparing them to our photos of the mock-up, we estimate the **Switch 2 to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**.

The original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall, making the **Switch 2 about 25% larger than its predecessor** if our figures are accurate.

These dimensions also make the Switch 2 about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).

While we couldn't precisely measure the depth of the Genki mock-up, indications suggest the Switch 2 will maintain a similar half-inch thickness to the original Switch. Thus, while the overall size increases significantly, the depth remains comparable.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The Switch 2 reveal trailer's transformation animation implies that the Joy-Con controllers will retain a similar width to the original Switch's, but they will be slightly taller. Using our quasi-scientific method of scaling images, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system) but 13mm taller to match the new console's size. If these numbers are correct, the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

Subtracting the size of the Joy-Cons from the overall console dimensions, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger than the original Switch** version.

This unit size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen, with an estimated 11mm bezel on each side and an 8mm bezel on the top and bottom. These bezels are slimmer on the sides than the original Switch, while the top and bottom bezels remain similar.

Please note, these measurements are estimates based on our best efforts and may differ from the official dimensions once Nintendo releases them. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we believe we're close to the mark and anticipate a console that's roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get our hands on it later this year.
