Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) reveals his consideration of developing a "spiritual successor" to his groundbreaking creation.
A Poll Reveals a Potential Minecraft 2
On January 1st, Notch posted a poll asking followers which of two projects he should prioritize: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid or a Minecraft-inspired game. The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his serious intent, stating he had essentially announced Minecraft 2. He expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project and acknowledged the strong fan desire for a new Minecraft-like experience. He emphasized that while the order of development isn't fixed, he's committed to creating a new game.
Navigating IP Rights and Expectations
It's important to note that Notch sold the Minecraft IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. This means he cannot directly use the Minecraft brand. However, he assures fans that any new project will avoid infringing on Mojang's current work, expressing respect for their ongoing efforts.
Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these concerns, he's leaning towards the fan-favorite option, driven by both enthusiasm and the potential financial success.
Looking Ahead
While awaiting Notch's potential Minecraft sequel, fans can anticipate upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks in the UK and US (2026 and 2027) and the release of the Minecraft live-action movie later in 2025.
