Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its flagship Star Wars series in May 2025, following the Battle of Jakku and the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. This new series will delve into the efforts of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa as they work to establish the New Republic and bring stability to a galaxy in turmoil.
The latest volume of Star Wars will be penned by Alex Segura, who previously worked on the Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku miniseries. The series will be brought to life by the artwork of Star Wars veteran Phil Noto, known for his work on Star Wars: Poe Dameron. Noto, along with Leinil Yu, will also be designing the covers for the first issue.
Set approximately two years after the events of Return of the Jedi, the story unfolds in the aftermath of the last major confrontation between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance at the Battle of Jakku. In this optimistic new chapter, the New Republic aims to solidify its position as the new governing power in the galaxy. However, Luke and his companions will encounter fresh challenges as various opportunistic criminals and villains exploit the ensuing power vacuum.
“Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking,” Segura shared with StarWars.com. “These stories will be packed with action and the character moments Star Wars fans have come to expect, featuring twists on the galaxy and landscape we know, with an eye toward making sure people can jump in easily and with any issue. We can't wait."
“Alex is an amazing writer and has come up with some great storylines and new characters for this series and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to bring them to life on the page! It’s also been exciting to draw the classic characters in the post-Return of the Jedi era because there’s no existing film or TV versions of them,” Noto remarked. “I get to create new looks for them while also having reference of the actors from the 80s to help sell the look of this timeline.”
Star Wars #1 is slated for release on May 7, 2025, perfectly timed with this year's Star Wars Day festivities.
This won't be the only new comic from Marvel set post-Return of the Jedi. In February, the publisher will launch Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, exploring Kylo Ren's journey following The Last Jedi.
