Marvel Rivals Players Risk Bans for Cheating

Summary

  • NetEase Games has warned Marvel Rivals players that modding the game could lead to permanent account bans, as it violates the terms of service.
  • Season 1 of Marvel Rivals introduced new heroes Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic, with Human Torch and The Thing to follow in future updates.
  • Despite NetEase's efforts to deter modding in Season 1, workarounds have been found, including a mod that bypasses asset hash checks.
  • It's unclear if NetEase has issued any bans for modding yet, but the company has emphasized that modding goes against their terms of service.

Marvel Rivals, developed and published by NetEase Games, has become a favorite among fans of Marvel Comics and team shooters since its launch in December 2024. The game's success has led to a nomination for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025, set to take place on February 13 in Las Vegas.

With the launch of Season 1, Marvel Rivals introduced exciting updates including buffs and nerfs to heroes and the addition of Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four to the playable roster. Fans can look forward to the arrival of Human Torch and The Thing in upcoming updates.

However, NetEase Games has taken a firm stance against modding, warning players that any modifications, from cosmetic changes to performance-enhancing add-ons, violate the game's terms of service and could result in permanent bans. This warning comes in response to the discovery of mods and workarounds that have emerged despite NetEase's efforts to prevent them.

In Season 1, NetEase implemented a hidden deterrent that checks asset hashes to detect modifications. Yet, a mod created by user Prafit and available on Nexus Mods circumvents this measure. Prafit's workaround has garnered over 500 downloads and comes with a disclaimer that users download at their own risk, particularly recommending it to those with high-end PCs. Another mod, created by Ercuallo, transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece, capitalizing on their similar superpowers, and was shared by RivalsLeaks on Twitter.

While some mods, such as one featuring US President-elect Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods, Prafit's Season 1 workaround remains available. Although there have been instances of false player bans since the game's launch, NetEase has not confirmed any bans specifically related to modding. The company continues to stress the importance of adhering to the game's terms of service, leaving players to wonder what actions NetEase might take in the future to address this issue.
