No Nintendo console would be complete without a Zelda title, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no different, albeit in a surprising format. During today's Nintendo Direct, we discovered that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors game titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This game serves as a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom and is slated for release this winter.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment introduces us to another chapter in the Hyrule Warriors series, featuring characters from the ancient history of Tears of the Kingdom. This includes fan-favorite Zelda alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. In the trailer, we got a glimpse of the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding magic, Rauru with his distinctive sword-spear, and brief appearances of other Sacred Stone wielders.
This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which was a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly notable for its storytelling, which, while connected to Breath of the Wild, took a slightly unexpected turn. It will be fascinating to see if Age of Imprisonment follows suit with its own unique narrative twists. We awarded Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
