Midnight Society, the game studio co-founded by popular streamer Guy 'Dr. Disrespect' Beahm, has announced that it will be closing its doors and canceling its highly anticipated FPS game, Deadrop. The studio shared this news via a post on X, stating, "Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers." They also reached out to the gaming community, inquiring if any studios are hiring and could offer employment opportunities to their team members.
Founded by Beahm alongside industry veterans Robert Bowling and Quinn Delhyo, who have worked on titles like Call of Duty and Halo, Midnight Society aimed to leverage their expertise with Deadrop. The game was envisioned as a free-to-play FPS set in a unique universe where "the 80s never ended." Visuals from the studio showcased characters donning Daft Punk-inspired helmets and equipped with an array of weapons and swords. The gameplay was intended to be a thrilling PvPvE extraction shooter, but unfortunately, it missed its planned 2024 release.
In 2024, Midnight Society parted ways with Beahm following his admission of exchanging messages with a minor through Twitch's Whispers feature, which he acknowledged as sometimes being inappropriate. Despite this split, the studio pressed on with Deadrop's development until the decision to shut down this year.
The closure of Midnight Society adds to the growing list of studios facing closure or layoffs during these challenging times in the gaming industry, affecting companies such as Ubisoft, BioWare, Phoenix Labs, and many others.
