Surviving a zombie apocalypse in Project Zomboid involves more than just finding a safe place to hole up; it's about fortifying that space against the relentless undead. One key aspect of maintaining your safehouse is constructing effective barricades, and one of the most straightforward yet impactful methods is boarding up your windows.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid - Barricading Windows

To secure your windows with wooden planks, you'll need to gather a few essential items: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you have these in your inventory, simply right-click on the window you wish to barricade. Your character will then begin the process of hammering the plank into place, effectively sealing off the window. You can repeat this process up to four times on each window, increasing the strength of your barricade with each additional board.

Finding the necessary materials might seem daunting, but they're often located where you'd expect: hammers and nails can be found in toolboxes, garages, tool sheds, and closets. Planks, on the other hand, are commonly available at construction sites. In a pinch, you can also salvage planks from wooden furniture such as shelves and chairs. If you're an admin playing Project Zomboid, you can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn these items directly into your inventory.

Project Zomboid - Window Barricade Effectiveness

A barricaded window significantly delays zombies attempting to break in, as each added board increases the time it takes for them to breach your defenses. Should you need to remove planks later, right-click on the boards and choose the "Remove" option. This task requires a claw hammer or a crowbar.

It's worth noting that in Project Zomboid, you can't use large furniture items like bookshelves or refrigerators to block windows, as both zombies and players can phase through them. However, understanding how to move furniture is useful for interior design and space management within your safehouse.

For those looking to create even sturdier barricades, metal bars or sheets can be used, but this requires a sufficient level of Metalworking skill. This advanced method can provide an extra layer of security against the undead hordes.
