The latest addition to Ubisoft's celebrated series of stealth-action open-world games, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has finally arrived. As fans dive into this new chapter set in 16th-century Japan, a pertinent question arises: where does it stand among the pantheon of Assassin’s Creed titles? With over 30 games bearing the Assassin’s Creed name, we focus here solely on the mainline entries, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR, and spin-off titles like Bloodlines or Liberation.
The journey began in 2007 with Desmond Miles exploring the memories of his ancestor Altaïr through the Animus. Fast forward 18 years, and players now embody Naoe and Yasuke in feudal Japan. As the 14th installment in the core series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows invites us to reflect on the entire saga. I've taken the liberty of ranking these games in an IGN Tier List, based on my personal enjoyment. Here’s a glimpse at my tier list:
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains my personal favorite, nestled comfortably in the S-tier. The blend of island exploration, ship combat, and a vibrant cast of characters creates what I consider the quintessential Assassin’s Creed experience. Sharing the S-tier spotlight is Assassin’s Creed 2, the game that truly elevated the series to new heights. In the A-tier, Valhalla might surprise some, but I adored the Viking-inspired combat and the engaging Orlog minigame. Alongside it, Unity earns its place with its breathtaking recreation of Revolutionary Paris, a visual marvel even a decade on.
Do you see things differently? Perhaps you believe Valhalla suffers from bloat or that Assassin’s Creed 2 is overrated? Now's your chance to weigh in. Create your own tier list below, ranking the mainline Assassin’s Creed games across S, A, B, C, and D tiers, and see how your rankings compare with the broader IGN community.
