Alec Baldwin's Rust Trailer Released: First Look at Western Film After Tragic Shooting

Author : Zachary Apr 09,2025

The first official trailer for the movie "Rust" has been unveiled, marking a significant moment for a film shadowed by tragedy. The movie, starring Alec Baldwin, encountered a devastating incident during production when a prop gun discharged by Baldwin accidentally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on October 22, 2021. Despite the somber backdrop, "Rust" is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 2, 2025. You can view the trailer [ttpp].

The official synopsis of "Rust" transports viewers to 1880s Kansas, where the story follows Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), a recently orphaned young man who accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a dramatic twist, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail. Together, they embark on a perilous journey toward Mexico, evading the relentless pursuit of U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).

The incident on the set of "Rust" involved a prop gun that was mistakenly loaded with live rounds, despite being declared a "cold gun." In the aftermath, charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, while the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was responsible for preparing the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with verifying the gun's safety, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.

"Rust" made its debut at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it honored Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Although Alec Baldwin was not present at the event, Joel Souza attended and paid tribute to Hutchins, saying, "We are here in a place that she loved so much, probably second only to being on set. I want to thank you all for coming and for taking a few hours out of your day to come celebrate my friend and to celebrate her art and her talent. She really was something."
