Absolute Batman Unveiled: Is Absolute Joker Next?

Author : Joshua Apr 01,2025

Absolute Batman has emerged as one of DC's most significant comic book launches in recent years. The first issue became the best-selling comic of 2024, and the series has consistently topped sales charts, showcasing readers' enthusiastic response to this bold and often surprising reinvention of the Dark Knight.

Following the conclusion of their first story arc, "The Zoo," creators Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta shared insights with IGN on how Absolute Batman redefines the classic Batman mythos. Delve into the discussions about crafting a physically imposing Batman, the impact of having a living mother on Bruce Wayne, and the looming threat of Absolute Joker.

The Batman of the Absolute Universe is a striking figure, characterized by his hulking physique, shoulder spikes, and a Batsuit that amplifies his intimidating presence. This design earned him a spot among the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta discussed how they envisioned this larger-than-life Batman, who lacks the traditional wealth and resources.

"Scott's vision was to make Batman larger than ever," Dragotta shared with IGN. "When he first saw my sketches, he pushed for even more size, likening it to Hulk-like proportions. The goal was to create a Batman whose every element, from his emblem to his suit, is a weapon. This approach not only defines his appearance but will continue to evolve as the series progresses."

For Snyder, the necessity of a physically imposing Batman stems from the absence of his traditional superpower—wealth. "In the classic Batman narrative, his wealth plays a significant role in intimidating criminals," Snyder explained. "Without that financial edge, this Batman must rely on his sheer physical presence to command respect and fear among Gotham's criminals. His size and the utility of his suit become his tools for combat and intimidation."

The influence of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is evident in Absolute Batman, particularly in a splash page from issue #6 that echoes Miller’s iconic (and surprisingly divisive) Dark Knight Returns cover. Dragotta acknowledges this homage, citing the storytelling and layout of Miller's and David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One as major inspirations.

Giving Batman a Family

Absolute Batman goes beyond physical changes, altering core elements of the Dark Knight's mythology, including the revelation that Bruce Wayne's mother, Martha, is alive. This significant shift means Batman is no longer a solitary orphan but a man with much more to lose.

"Introducing Martha was a major decision," Snyder revealed. "It added a new dimension to Bruce's character, making him both stronger and more vulnerable. Her presence as a moral compass and a potential target adds complexity to the narrative. Our story is planned through Issue 24, but much of it evolves as we go, with Martha becoming a central figure."

Another notable change is Bruce's childhood friendships with characters like Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. These individuals, traditionally part of Batman’s rogues gallery, form an extended family in this universe. Snyder teases that upcoming issues will explore how these relationships shaped Bruce's transformation into Batman.

PlayAbsolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask ---------------------------------------

In "The Zoo," Absolute Batman confronts a new generation of supervillains, with a focus on Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask. Leading the Party Animals, a gang reveling in Gotham's chaos, Black Mask represents a unique challenge for Batman's early days.

"We chose Black Mask because his nihilistic persona fit the theme of our story," Snyder explained. "We transformed him into something fresh while staying true to his core as a crime boss. His aesthetic and philosophy align with our narrative's darker, more chaotic tone."

The climax of their confrontation in issue #6 sees Batman delivering a brutal beating to Black Mask on his yacht. Despite the intensity, Batman stops short of killing him, a testament to his moral boundaries even in this new universe. This fight underscores Batman's underdog status and his determination to make a difference.

The Threat of Absolute Joker

The series hints at the inevitable clash between Batman and his arch-nemesis, the Joker. In this universe, Absolute Joker embodies the antithesis of Batman, with wealth, global training, and a chilling absence of laughter.

"In our inverted world, Batman is the disruptor, while Joker represents the system," Snyder noted. "Their relationship is central to the series, with Joker already a terrifying figure before his direct confrontation with Batman."

The final pages of "The Zoo" tease Joker's involvement, showing him wrapped in a macabre cocoon and summoning Bane to deal with Batman. This suggests a calculated and already evolved villain, diverging from traditional origins.

PlayWhat to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane ---------------------------------------------------------

Issues #7 and #8 introduce a new arc with Marcos Martin taking over art duties, focusing on Mr. Freeze. This version of Freeze is a darker, more twisted character, reflecting Bruce's own struggles and uncertainties post-"The Zoo."

"Mr. Freeze's story parallels Bruce's internal conflicts," Snyder said. "We're pushing boundaries with these characters, creating a darker, more intense take that fits our universe."

Bane is another looming threat, with Snyder confirming that he remains a physically imposing figure. "Bane is big, designed to dwarf even our massive Batman," he noted, setting the stage for a formidable confrontation.

The broader Absolute line, including Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman, will begin to interconnect in 2025, with new titles like Absolute Flash, Absolute Green Lantern, and Absolute Martian Manhunter. Snyder hints at future interactions and crossovers among these characters, enriching the narrative tapestry of the Absolute Universe.
