A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer ports exist than on other consoles, making this selection even more noteworthy. This list highlights ten favorites—four GBA and six DS games—presented without ranking. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison and a potentially more accessible experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, even for those who usually avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true Mega Man successor. Mega Man Zero launches an excellent side-scrolling action series, albeit with some initial rough edges. These are smoothed out in later entries, but the first game is the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by the significant differences between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The core concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Another collection worth playing in its entirety, but Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite. For me, it's even preferable to the amazing Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages grinding, which is easy to overlook due to the engaging gameplay. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal. A top-tier third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae was a cult classic, hampered by limited distribution. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, broadened its reach significantly, launching Shantae into continued success across generations. This game occupies an interesting space, having roots in an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is also slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game, given its origins, though released later. Ace Attorney is a well-known series of adventure games blending investigations and courtroom drama. The humorous tone complements compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, although later installments also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick shares its strong writing but features unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. A captivating experience, deserving of more recognition. Capcom's persistence in bringing this title to new platforms is commendable.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally played on its original hardware due to its optimized design. However, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative if a DS isn't readily available. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. Each game is worthwhile, but Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from improved button controls over the original touch controls. All three DS games in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise challenging to replicate outside the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's Switch adaptation is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit somewhat challenging, adventure.
